Amy, a member of SAG/AFTRA and Actors Equity, has guest lectured at CMU, Point Park, Hunter College, CCAC and NYU.  She’s also produced over two hundred demos for actors, and many commercials, industrials and audiobooks, including The Diversity Dialogs with NPR.

Jack BaileyJack Bailey ([email protected]) is Pittsburgh’s most experienced soundtrack designer & producer.  In the course of a 40-year career serving as Director of Audio Services at various recording facilities, Jack has engineered and/or produced well over 20,000 soundtracks…in Pittsburgh, New York, San Francisco, Dallas, and Nashville.  He now specializes in producing soundtracks for video/film, and directing spoken word recordings (including the coaching and production of professional voice-over demos), and enjoys teaching both subjects.  Jack has put his Masters degree in Education to work, having taught audio production at Robert Morris University, Pittsburgh Filmmakers, and currently in CCAC’s Film Technician Training program; he’s taught voice acting at Pittsburgh Filmmakers, CCAC, and currently in Point Park’s Conservatory of Performing Arts, as well as in his 20+-year voice-over partnership with Amy Hartman.

In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, our commitment to social distancing, and in cooperation with our sponsor, Nancy Mosser Casting, we’ve taken our VO classes online.  We’re hosting our classes on Zoom, the most popular online videoconferencing platform for training and education, and students are able use Zoom software for free in the comfort and safety of their homes.  Among the many benefits of being online:

–No more traveling to the downtown Pittsburgh studio every week;
–Class size isn’t limited by the size of the control room;
–Participants are no longer limited by their proximity to the studio: we now have students all over the country;
–We don’t have to schedule time in a professional studio, so we can charge lower fees.

We offer several curriculum “levels” to voice-over trainees, based on their experience:

TAKE 1 –Introductory/Overview classes for VO novices or those with little or long-ago experience;
TAKE 2 –Intermediate classes for students who are grads of Introductory classes &/or have some VO experience;
TAKE 3 –Advanced Labs for VO Pros — may include group classes, one-on-one coaching, and/or demo prep;
VOICE-OVER DEMO PRODUCTION –By either Amy, Jack, or the two of us together.

Note that the lines between these categories are fuzzy, and most students will qualify for at least two of them at any given time.

  • *** Presenting our THURSDAY VO LABS! ***
  • We divide each class time into a balance of lecture — giving students information about the voice-over business — and student readings+direction.  Both are essential in VO classes, but we’ve found that we can’t get into the necessary depth on our lecture topics and still have time for every student to do readings in each class.  So we’ve created an optional, weekly VO Lab so you can get supplemental “mic time” if you want it, and it’s open to all current workshoppers.  Any week that you feel that you want to get some additional reading practice, you can register for that Thursday’s LAB right up until two hours before class time!

Optional THURSDAY VO LABS— 7:00-9:30 PM
Six Consecutive Thursdays: July 9, 16, 23, 30; August 6 and 13.

Fee:  $35 per session attended

Register for any LAB session that you want to attend — right up until 5:00 PM on Thursday class night — through the link below.  Confirmed registered students will be sent a password-protected invitation to the class.

  • ***********************************************************************

As stated above, we disseminate general information about the VO business in our TAKE 1: Intro to VOs class.  In this TAKE 2: INTENSIVE INTERMEDIATE VO course, we go into a lot more depth in both essential information and  intensive script interpretation.  And as a current workshopper, you’ll have access to Thursday Labs to sharpen up your readings.

…Guerilla Self-Marketing strategies: how and where to find work, and how to let work find you;
…Intensive script and mic work, with emphasis on demo preparation;  [No, you won’t walk away with a demo.*]
…Prioritizing your next moves;
…Advice on building your Home VO Studio;
…and other topics & exercises essential to getting your voice out there & into the market!

[*–Demo production is a whole different thing.  We’ll explain why in class.}

–Class size is limited, and registration is by invitation only* — open to TAKE 1 graduates, Voice Acting program graduates, and working VO pros.

*NoteIf you’ve been invited to register for this Take 2 workshop, you’ll receive a private link to a registration page.
